Kalling’s No.2 Reagent (AKA Kalling’s etch, waterless Kalling’s) is a metallographic etchant for etching Ni-Cu, nickel-based superalloys, ferritic and martensitic 400 series stainless steels. This etchant will darken martensite, attack ferrite readily and etch austenite slightly. It will not attack carbides.
This product is made with ACS reagent grade cupric chloride, hydrochloric acid, and ethanol. The formula is listed in ASTM standard E 407 as formula number 94 “Kalling’s 2”. Some people call this solution waterless Kalling’s. But in fact, this mixture has a small amount of water in it which comes from the alcohol and hydrochloric acid.
We have a stronger modified version of Kalling’s reagent here for corrosion-resistant superalloys.
- Polish the sample surface with diamond slurry or alumina (1 µm or finer) before etching.
- The metal surface has to be etched as soon it’s polished, cleaned and dried without any delay. Otherwise, the metal surface will oxidize and passivate.
- Use this product under a fume hood. Immerse or swab the polished surface few seconds to a minute.
