Description

Fry’s Reagent is a metallurgical etchant designed for the study of precipitation hardening stainless steels (PH grade), martensitic stainless steels, and certain superalloys. It serves as an effective stain for weld inspection, enhancing the visibility of the weld nugget when used alongside Nital Etch. This product is formulated with reagent-grade chemicals and is listed as formula number 79, “Fry’s,” in ASTM standard E 407. Additionally, we have a stronger version of Fry’s available for forensic investigation purposes.

User Instructions:

  • Prepare the sample surface before etching.
    • For microscopic studies, mirror polish is required.
    • For visual inspection of welds, a uniform 600-grit finish is required.
  • Swab the sample for a few seconds to minutes.
  • Etch any corrosion-resistant alloy as soon as it’s polished, cleaned, and dried without delay. Otherwise, the metal surface will passivate.

Packaging:

Nalgene® Leakproof Bottle, HDPE.
